Ramon Saumell was born in Vilafranca del Penedès and has lived for many years in Vilanova i la Geltrú. He has collected photos of traditional and folkloric mythical creatures in festival processions for over twenty-five years and has one of the best photography collections on Catalan and Occitan mythical creatures. His quest has been so extensive that he possesses a lot of information about traditional festival figures that are no longer in existence.
His collections and images have been used to illustrate a large number of thematic books and exhibitions; examples include the audiovisual exhibition Bestiari Fantàstic de Catalunya 1984-1992 (Fantastical Creatures of Catalonia); the photography exhibition Bestiari de Foc a Catalunya 1991-2003 (Fire Creatures of Catalonia); photos in the book Festa a Catalunya 1995 (Festival in Catalonia) and in the book l’Àliga de Reus 1996 (The Eagle of Reus). It also includes the recent photography exhibition called Bestiari Festiu Europeu (European Festival Creatures) as well as photographic and censual information in the book Bèsties de festa! 2008 (Festival creatures!).
Ramon’s insatiable and passionate search has led him to many countries throughout the world and, in addition to the photo galleries on this website, Ramon has a small exhibition of European folkloric and mythical creatures open to the public.
