MEDIEVAL BESALÚ

In around the year 1000 AD, Besalú was one of the most important counties in Catalonia. The town was the central point of a wide area, and was a connection point between the flat coastal plains, agricultural areas, commercial districts and the high lands, which were mainly used for cattle farming. In the 14th century, Besalú was still the biggest commercial centre in the Garrotxa region, a place where peasants, craftsmen, traders and businessmen travelled from the whole area. Business flourished in Besalú because lots of people went there to sell produce and also spend money on locally manufactured products. The town was home to many successful drapers, grocers, shoemakers, tile makers and carpenters, amongst others.

For almost ten years now, at the end of August, Besalú relives this magnificent epoch and the town journeys one thousand years back in time, offering all its visitors fun performances and historical references. All the local people dress in medieval clothes and the shops are decorated accordingly. In the historical centre of Besalú, and on the river banks of the Fluvià, a great number of events take place, such as processions of lords, ladies and other historical figures, music, knight tournaments, catapult firing, duals, camping by the river, a market, horse riding and boat rides, bracelet making workshops, kids' stories, guided visits and, amongst many other things, a dinner with fire show.
